Assisted Reproductive Technology or ART can be defined as a reproductive technology used for infertility treatment. This fertility treatment method makes use of fertility medication, in vitro fertilization  to achieve pregnancy.

Types of Assisted Reproductive Technology

In order to help people to achieve pregnancy assisted reproductive technology covers a wide spectrum of treatments, depending on the cause of infertility.

The following are some of the assisted reproductive technology:

Ovulation Induction (OI): This type of treatment technology is used in a woman who is not ovulating or not ovulating regularly. In this procedure, a tablet or injection (hormone medication) will be given to increase the production of follicle stimulating hormone. This results in the development of one or more follicles and by using the administration of another hormone egg will be released from the follicle. The chances of conception greatly increase, if the couple has intercourse around this time.

Artificial Insemination (AI): Artificial insemination or Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a treatment technology used in women with healthy fallopian tubes, but cannot conceive due to unknown reasons. In this procedure, just before the time of ovulation the semen is inserted into the uterus of the woman through the cervix.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): In this procedure the eggs are removed from the ovary and fertilized with the sperm in a laboratory procedure, then the fertilized eggs or embryo is transferred to the uterus.

Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT): In this procedure the eggs retrieved from the ovaries are inserted into two layers of sperm in fine tubing. Then the sperm and eggs are allowed to fertilize naturally by feeding this tube into the woman's fallopian tubes.

Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): ICSI involves the injection of a single sperm into the egg to achieve fertilization

Assisted Reproductive technology (ART)
 

It is otherwise called artificial insemination or test tube baby in which the sperms and egg are taken out of the body and in a sterile culture lab where the embryo is formed. IVF and ICSI are the two prominent protocols to treat infertility.
 

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF) is generally preferred to the women who have endometriosis, blocked or damaged fallopian tubes where the egg and sperm cannot meet each other. In this procedure, a woman is administered with hormones for proper ovulation. Once the ovum is formed it is retried and injected with sperm, kept in the lab for 3-5 days for embryo formation. After the embryo formation, it is placed in the woman’s uterus to achieve a successful pregnancy.
 

Intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) is a procedure done for male infertility. In this procedure, the mature egg is held with a specialized pipette. A sharp, hollow needle is used to pick the quality sperm and then the quality sperm is inserted through the egg shell and into the egg’s cytoplasmic area. After injecting the sperm into cytoplasm the needle is removed. The eggs are regularly checked out for the normal fertilization.
