Types of Assisted Reproductive Technology

In order to help people to achieve pregnancy assisted reproductive technology covers a wide spectrum of treatments, depending on the cause of infertility.
The following are some of the assisted reproductive technology:

Ovulation Induction (OI): This type of treatment technology is used in a woman who is not ovulating or not ovulating regularly. In this procedure, a tablet or injection (hormone medication) will be given to increase the production of follicle stimulating hormone. This results in the development of one or more follicles and by using the administration of another hormone egg will be released from the follicle. The chances of conception greatly increase, if the couple has intercourse around this time.

Artificial Insemination (AI): Artificial insemination or Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a treatment technology used in women with healthy fallopian tubes, but cannot conceive due to unknown reasons. In this procedure, just before the time of ovulation the semen is inserted into the uterus of the woman through the cervix.

In Vitro Fertilization (IVF): In this procedure the eggs are removed from the ovary and fertilized with the sperm in a laboratory procedure, then the fertilized eggs or embryo is transferred to the uterus.

Gamete Intrafallopian Transfer (GIFT): In this procedure the eggs retrieved from the ovaries are inserted into two layers of sperm in fine tubing. Then the sperm and eggs are allowed to fertilize naturally by feeding this tube into the woman's fallopian tubes.

Intra Cytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): ICSI involves the injection of a single sperm into the egg to achieve fertilization

Vijaya Fertility Clinic IVF and Endoscopic Centre, is the First IVF centre in Kerala, provides all kinds of infertility treatments at affordable rates. Dr N P Vijayalakshmy who is specialized in Assisted Reproductive Technology effectively treats infertile couples with her vast experience and expertise.

Managing Infertility With ICSI

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection or ICSI treatment is a popular method of artificial fertilisation in ART (Artificial Reproduction Technique). An ideal treatment method for treating severe male infertility, it is increasingly used in cases of low sperm count or lack of quality sperm.

The method of ICSI involves the direct injection of sperm into the egg cytoplasm with the help of a micro injection needle. The process is mainly beneficial when the number of sperm available is very less. The method is used along with IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) as well.

ICSI Procedure

The initial process in ICSI involves sperm and egg retrieval from the male and female partner. This is done in with the help of procedures usually practised in other artificial fertilisation techniques. However in case of men suffering with very low or no sperm count special sperm extraction techniques.

The ICSI procedure involves the immobilisation of sperm extracted, with the help of the laser immobilisation technology. The immobilised sperm is then aspirated into a microinjection needle and directly injected into an egg that is held with a holding pipette. They are left in a laboratory environment for fertilisation to occur and later implanted in the mother’s womb.

The procedure ensures the highest probability for successful fertilisation the direct injection technique helps in overcoming several hurdles in the process. The process is known to have a high success rate of about 63% in cases of transfer on the 5th or 6th day. The success rate is about 41% in 3rd day transfers.

Sperm Extraction Techniques

These techniques are relied on, in cases of very less or no sperm during ejaculation. The different types of sperm extraction techniques are as follows.

  • MESA – Micro Epididymal Sperm Aspiration
  • PESA – Percutaneous Sperm Aspiration
  • TESE – Testicular Sperm Extraction
The success rate of fertilisation in ICSI is about 90% although the overall success rate is lower than regular IVF.

The Vijaya Fertility IVF and Endoscopy centre (Vijaya Institute of Medical Sciences) in Kochi provides complete and advanced solutions for infertility under the same roof, at affordable rates.

Female Infertility is a condition, where a woman is not able to become pregnant. Continuous miscarriages are also called infertility. This condition becomes a social stigma.

There are a number of causes for female infertility such as:
  • Endometriosis
  • Uterine fibroids
  • Malnutrition
  • Excessive exercising
  • Pelvic inflammatory diseases
  • Tumor in ovary
  • Hormonal Imbalance
  • Issues in the cervix
  • Failing in the implantation embryo in the uterine cavity
  • Production of delicate eggs
  • Unexplained infertility (no exact cause is found in such cases)
Given below are the core female infertility treatments:

“Female Evaluation” is the method of knowing a woman’s following details:
  • Menstrual cycle
  • Medical disorders
  • Abdomen & Pelvic surgeries
  • Frequency of sexual relationship and any dysfunction
  • Personal history of alcoholism, smoking, age, occupation, stress, dieting
  • Physical examinations and pathological diagnostic are done to find the exact cause of infertility.
Ovulation Induction: Naturally one of the ovaries produces one mature egg fourteen days before periods. Some women may experience lower abdomen pain, increased vaginal discharge during ovulation. PCOS, Thyroid dysfunction, hyperinsulinemia, increased prolactin level are the factors which void ovulation. Ovulation induction is done by injection and pills.

Gonadotropin injections: It stimulates a woman’s ovary which is more effective than fertility pills. These injections are used for hyperstimulation and controlled hyperstimulation is a part of many reproductive technologies such as IVF, IUI. A non-steroidal fertility medicine “Clomiphene citrate” induces the pituitary gland to release hormones necessary to stimulate ovulation.

Artificial Insemination or Intrauterine Insemination: It is a method of injecting sperm into the uterus or cervix to achieve pregnancy through IVF instead of regular coitus.

Under Assisted Reproductive Technology (ART), the following treatments are prescribed for female infertility.

IVF (In Vitro Fertilization)
: It the process of combining mature egg and a vital sperm in a Petri dish (a laboratory dish) and then transferring the embryo into the uterus.

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI): It Select a vital sperm and inject into a healthy egg that results in the embryo which is transferred into the uterus.
Egg donation: It is preferred to a woman who has a uterus but does not have ovaries. It is also called third party reproduction since the egg is obtained from the donor.

Embryo Donation : It is also called as third party reproduction, where the donation is done by placing the embryo in the recipient uterus for pregnancy.
