Managing Infertility With ICSI

Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection or ICSI treatment is a popular method of artificial fertilisation in ART (Artificial Reproduction Technique). An ideal treatment method for treating severe male infertility, it is increasingly used in cases of low sperm count or lack of quality sperm.

The method of ICSI involves the direct injection of sperm into the egg cytoplasm with the help of a micro injection needle. The process is mainly beneficial when the number of sperm available is very less. The method is used along with IVF (In Vitro Fertilisation) as well.

ICSI Procedure

The initial process in ICSI involves sperm and egg retrieval from the male and female partner. This is done in with the help of procedures usually practised in other artificial fertilisation techniques. However in case of men suffering with very low or no sperm count special sperm extraction techniques.

The ICSI procedure involves the immobilisation of sperm extracted, with the help of the laser immobilisation technology. The immobilised sperm is then aspirated into a microinjection needle and directly injected into an egg that is held with a holding pipette. They are left in a laboratory environment for fertilisation to occur and later implanted in the mother’s womb.

The procedure ensures the highest probability for successful fertilisation the direct injection technique helps in overcoming several hurdles in the process. The process is known to have a high success rate of about 63% in cases of transfer on the 5th or 6th day. The success rate is about 41% in 3rd day transfers.

Sperm Extraction Techniques

These techniques are relied on, in cases of very less or no sperm during ejaculation. The different types of sperm extraction techniques are as follows.

  • MESA – Micro Epididymal Sperm Aspiration
  • PESA – Percutaneous Sperm Aspiration
  • TESE – Testicular Sperm Extraction
The success rate of fertilisation in ICSI is about 90% although the overall success rate is lower than regular IVF.
